Goal of the Project:
The Life Stories writer (intern) will help older-adults (age group) who are impacted by poverty to share oral history - life stories.The interaction with the writer and the sharing of their life stories will alleviate social isolation, improve social and emotional well-being, and raise Life Story participants’ standard of living and sense of belonging to a community. The project will also empower the local community, build capacity, and provide sustainable solutions for the elderly population.
The intern, in collaboration with Jewish Family Services (JFS) will work with the local senior community.The volunteers will meet with them on a weekly basis for five sessions, hear their fascinating life stories, and create a short book of each of the seniors.
The Ideal Candidate:
A person with patience, empathy, and affinity for the elderly population.The candidate should be self-confident to ask questions and interview seniors, listen to the story behind the words and have the ability to execute a written story from an interview. The selected candidate will receive professional training in writing life stories and will gain the opportunity to influence the quality of life of the elderly in the community and create a healthy future for them.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will meet for five sessions with the seniors for the duration of the project. The volunteer interviews them, transcribe the interviews into a narrative that will be expressed in a written story, and submit a draft to the Program Manager and the participants every week (the writing part is an option). The intern will meet with the Program Manager and the other volunteers once a week to get supervision and guidance.The intern must have knowledge of office software, writing skills (at least 20 pages in a coherent clear manner), independent workability, and time management. Must have access to a computer.
About the Agency:
The Jewish Family Services (JFS), is the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation (YAJF) social agency that is located on the north side of Youngstown. The purpose of the agency is to respond to the personal, emotional, and financial needs of people in the community, Jewish and non- Jewish, in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties, and Pennsylvania (Sharon and New Castle area). JFS provides counseling, programs, education, referrals, and kosher meals to the clients’ houses, guardian, and financial affairs of people unable to do so for themselves.

*There are currently four open positions. Hours are flexible. Must be willing to undergo a background check in accordance with local law and regulations.
*The interns will receive full membership to the Jewish Community Center facilities (gym, fitness center, indoor and outdoor pool, etc.) for the internship term.
