There is a joke about the High Holidays: Aren’t they early this year, or late this year? But when are they “on time”? As we enter almost 17 months since the onset of COVID, we are still adjusting to the “new normal,” and for the Annual Federation Campaign this is no different. All of our Campaign events kicking off the 2021 Campaign are in August for the first time. And, the venues for these events are all outdoors.
On August 9, our Manor Donor Appreciation Event will be held outdoors at the JCC Pavilion for households who contribute $3,600 or more to our Annual Campaign. Our event will include a delicious picnic dinner, with appropriate social-distancing. Our keynote speaker is Alan Zweibel, an original Saturday Night Live writer, screenwriter, and best-selling author. Alan will describe his experience writing for some of television's most beloved comedies from “Saturday Night Live” to “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and discuss how his career success has transcended television to film, theater, and literature. Alan has won multiple Emmy and Writers Guild awards for his work in television, which also includes "It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” (which he co-created and produced), “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” A frequent guest on all of the late-night talk shows, Alan’s theatrical contributions include his collaboration with Billy Crystal on the Tony Award winning play “700 Sundays,” Martin Short’s Broadway hit “Fame Becomes Me,” and six off-Broadway plays including “Bunny Bunny – Golda Radner: A Sort of Romantic Comedy.” With all that we have experienced after almost a year and a half of COVID (and we all know that the virus is not behind us yet), we need a little more humor in our lives. For further information, please contact Lisa Long, our financial resource development director.
Next, our 2021 Inaugural Event (open to the entire Jewish community) will be held on Monday, August 30, beginning at 6 p.m. on the JCC’s Logan Campus. The event is an outdoor concert with delicious food and will feature Israeli performer Hadar Orshalimy. Born and raised in Tel Aviv, Hadar grew up performing at various nationally televised events, including an appearance on the first season of “Kochav Nolad” (“Israeli Idol”). After serving as a nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare defense trainer in the IDF, she found her way to New York City by way of the Rimon School of Music and Berklee College of Music. Hadar has since made a name for herself as a songwriter and recording artist, with four album releases and song placements in film and TV. She is also a highly regarded live performer, making over 100 appearances across North America each year. Hadar has performed for well-known dignitaries such as George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Dick Cheney, Madeleine Albright. and Nikki Haley. This event, in a beautiful outdoor setting at our Logan Campus, should not be missed. Again, watch your mail for your invitation, and I look forward to seeing you.
After our lives have been forever changed since March 2020, it will be fantastic to see so many of you. I promise, you will not be disappointed, and if you have not been out to see Logan, you will see first-hand what our JCC members are raving about.
Next month, we will celebrate the High Holidays and the Jewish New Year 5782. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I look forward to seeing you in August.
