Beth Israel Cemetery

Beth Israel Cemetery, located in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, is the only Jewish Cemetery in Mercer County.

In 1888, a group of Russian immigrant peddlers established an orthodox congregation called House of Israel on the second floor of a widow’s home in Sharon, Pennsylvania.

In 1906, the House of Israel purchased land for a cemetery in what was then called Hickory Township. Twenty-five years later, an adjoining property was purchased jointly by the House of Israel and B’nai Zion Synagogue, an orthodox congregation located in Farrell, Pennsylvania. The cemetery was shared by the two congregations, with the west side used by B’nai Zion and the east side used by the House of Israel. A center path separated the two sections.

In 1948, the House of Israel became Temple Beth Israel, a progressive Jewish congregation, and on June 1,1972, B’nai Zion Synagogue merged with Temple Beth Israel and the cemetery became unified.

Beth Israel Cemetery is located at 251 Mercer Avenue (PA State Route 418) in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. The gate is always closed, but never locked. After visiting the cemetery, please make sure that the gate is secured.
