Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Statement about Kanye West Statements

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has recently used his media presence and social influence to espouse antisemitic tropes about Jewish intimidation, power, and control, and to explicitly threaten violence against Jewish people. Antisemitism in all forms and from any sources must never be accepted or tolerated. West’s comments are unacceptable, dangerous, and beyond all standards of decency.  Indeed, following his most recent remarks, prominent conspiracy theorists, extremist racist groups and antisemitic influencers were quick to leverage his words to promote their own beliefs. West, who has more on-line followers than there are Jews in the world, could have used his influence to create positive change. Instead, he has shown no remorse or contrition for his string of antisemitic remarks filled with hate and lies, and is using his influence to reinforce antisemitic tropes.

We are thankful for the many organizations and individuals of all races and religions who have spoken out against West’s statements, and for those who have broken business ties with him, illustrating that antisemitism is unacceptable and creates consequences. We are committed to continue to join forces with our interfaith and interracial partners to stand up to all forms of hatred, and proud of our strong relationships where we work together for the greater good of the Valley and beyond.
