For many community members, a familiar voice will answer the phone when they call to inquire about the JMeals program. Sherry Walker worked as a meal delivery person for JMeals before the COVID-19 pandemic, and she will now serve as the JMeals associate.
"When I worked here previously in meal delivery, I really enjoyed getting to know the people who got their meals delivered. It's very exciting to reconnect with the community this way," Walker said.
When Walker isn't working at JMeals, she can be found at the JCC, where she enjoys participating in the Aging Well programs, water aerobics, and Lunch & Learns. She also stays busy keeping track of her adult children and grandkids.
Walker's work with JMeals keeps her busy since she retired from her "adult job" with the Children's Hunger Alliance, where she served as a field representative.
"I wanted to remain positively active in my community in my retirement. That's why I came to JMeals. It is a wonderful program. It sees a need in our community and helps to fill the gap," Walker said.
After spending many years ensuring vulnerable populations stay fed, Walker is certain of one thing.
"We all can do something to help others. There are so many different avenues, both big and small. And everyone can use a helping hand from time to time."
