A grand reopening of the Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown was held in June.
Staff realized in recent years the studio space wasn’t inclusive for all, though it was meant to provide art classes for everyone.
“When Paul [Gluck] heard we wanted to upgrade to make it a space for all ages and abilities, he asked, ‘What do you need?’” said Barb Wilson, JCC director of cultural arts & Jewish engagement.
In 2020, the Glucks wanted to do something meaningful for the community. After discussions with Federation leadership, they provided the funding and SoVA was born. They also provided the funding for the accessibility upgrades.
The upgrades include adaptable art supplies and tools and new tables and chairs to better accommodate people with physical disabilities. A low table is available for wheelchair users, some stools have backs for those who need support, and the space can be reconfigured to handle a variety of needs.
“Art is for everyone, and now our studio is better equipped than ever to welcome and inspire artists of all ages and abilities,” said Wilson.
The grand reopening included a ribbon cutting by the Glucks, refreshments, and a tour. Participants were able to make and take some art and meet the SoVA team.
