Mezuzah ceremony marks new chapter for Schwartz Holocaust and Antisemitism Resource Center

The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation recently celebrated the hanging of a mezuzah at the entrance of the newly renovated Schwartz Holocaust and Antisemitism Resource Center, located within the Jewish Community Center. The ceremony brought together community members, educators, JCC staff, and students from the Early Learning Center at the JCC. Rabbi Seth Sternstein of Temple El Emeth led the blessing and affixed the mezuzah to the doorway, marking the center as a place dedicated to Jewish learning, remembrance, and community engagement. A mezuzah contains a handwritten parchment inscribed with verses from the Torah, including the Shema prayer. Traditionally placed on the right doorpost of Jewish homes and Jewish communal spaces, it serves as a reminder of faith, values, and the connection between everyday life and Jewish tradition. For the young children who attended, the ceremony offered a meaningful introduction to Jewish customs and heritage. Through age-appropriate explanations and participation in the event, students learned about the significance of the mezuzah and the importance of preserving Jewish traditions across generations. The Schwartz Holocaust and Antisemitism Resource Center serves as an educational resource for the community, providing programs, materials, and opportunities for learning about the Holocaust, Jewish history, and contemporary antisemitism. The mezuzah hanging symbolized not only the completion of a renovation project but also the center’s ongoing commitment to education, memory, and Jewish continuity.
