The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. As military action continues to escalate in Ukraine, we are growing increasingly concerned for the safety and well-being of those who find themselves in the middle of this crisis. This includes a large and vibrant Ukrainian Jewish community of approximately 200,000 people, who are not strangers to antisemitism, especially in times of conflict.
We unequivocally condemn Russia’s attack on this independent democratic country. We pray for all affected by this crisis, including our friends and neighbors here in Youngstown with family in Ukraine, and we pray for peace.
As always, the Federation will work with our partners in and out of the Jewish community to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need.
Jewish Federations of North America and partner agencies Joint Distribution Committee, The Jewish Agency for Israel, and World ORT have already established immediate, critical needs for the following:
Ensuring welfare services for displaced populations
Providing emergency Aliyah and community security needs
Locating temporary housing for those in transit
Stockpiling of goods including food and water
Providing satellite phones to ensure communication across the country
Ensuring that five World ORT schools and Hillel locations continue to operate
Dispatching medical staff support, especially on the border with Moldova
Funding the need for moving JAFI operations from Kyiv to L’viv
The need for aid is great. We are taught that we are responsible for one another (Kol Yisrael arevim zeh la-zeh) – that when one Jew suffers, all Jews suffer. The Jewish Federations of North America has set up a mailbox for those wishing to help.
